Board of Directors Announces Five Scholarship Winners for Academic Year 2006-2007

THE MARINES’ MEMORIAL ASSOCIATION AWARDS nine scholarships annually. Five of the nine were selected by the Board of Directors at their May Board Meeting. Competition was stiff, as the number of applications this year increased by 600%. This increase was due primarily to the decision by the Board to make grandchildren of Members eligible as well as children.

Competition for the $5000 Bechtel Engineering and Science Scholarship was especially keen. All of our applicants for this scholarship were highly qualified. This is our newest scholarship and it is intended by the S.D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation to encourage qualified students to major in Engineering or one of the Sciences. The individual selected for the $5000 Bechtel scholarship is Tamara Grace Alexander. Tamara has a 4.36 GPA, and is an honor student at Menlo High School in Redwood City. Tamara has been accepted to Stanford University for the fall and intends to major in Mechanical Engineering. Her grandfather is a Life Member of the Association.

The next scholarship category administered by the Marines’ Memorial Association is awarded in the name of two Marine Sergeants who left their entire estate to the Marines’ Memorial Association. We have implemented multiple scholarships in their names. Each year, the Board awards four scholarships in the amount of $2500 each to children or grandchildren of our Members. For the four $2500 Sergeants Henry and Jeanne Rose Scholarships, we had many, many applications. What a shame that we couldn’t award more than just four. The four winners are:

Jessica Marie Scheimer. Jessica will enter University of California at Davis in the fall as a freshman. She intends to major in Physics and Economics, and then become a teacher, and eventually, an astronaut. She is active in track and
baton twirling. She graduated with a 4.184 GPA, was top student in her high school Physics, English and History classes, and received multiple academic achievement awards. Jessica’s father is a retired USAF Colonel.

Anthony Lamonte Frazier. Anthony will return to Virginia Commonwealth University as a sophomore this fall, having been recognized as an honor student in his freshman year. He is majoring in Forensic Biology and wants to become an FBI Agent when he graduates. He graduated from high school In Carlsbad, CA with a 4.31 GPA. His father is an active duty Marine Officer.

Andrew Arthur Sayles. Andrew will enter the University of Michigan this fall to study Computer Engineering. He graduated from Valley Christian High School in Dublin, CA with a 4.08 GPA. Andrew has been very active in Boy Scouts, earning the Eagle Scout rank. His grandfather is a Marine.

Jenna Collette Kelleher. Jenna is scheduled to enter University of California at Berkeley this fall as a freshman, intending to major in Bioengineering. She has a 4.60 GPA at Newbury Park High School. She is active in school choir and tutoring others in math. She lived for four years in Japan when her father, an active duty Lieutenant Commander in the Navy, was stationed there.

At press time, the four winners for the $1000 Colonel Barnes Scholarships had not been announced by the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation. We will publish their names in our next edition.

HELP US WITH SCHOLARSHIPS

---How many organizations do you know where every donated dollar goes to its intended, worthwhile purpose? Here’s an opportunity to participate in such a campaign!

---An anonymous donor has pledged to match every dollar you donate toward scholarships for children and grandchildren of Members who are accepted into accredited colleges or universities, and who have financial need. This generous act comes at a particularly opportune time, as our Board recently was forced to choose only 5 scholarship winners from among 51 superbly qualified applicants.

---We invite you to make a donation for our scholarship program. Any Member making a donation greater than $250 will receive a complimentary 60th Anniversary book and an acknowledgement in Crossroads.

---Donors giving more than $25,000 will have scholarships named for them for the next two years. Best of all, every dollar donated will be matched by our anonymous donor and then applied toward a scholarship for a deserving dependent or grandchild of one of our Members.
