Colonel Starling was selected as a Fellow for the Hoover Institute after commanding a Battalion Landing Team of Marines and Sailors on his fifth deployment to the Persian Gulf in July 2007. While deployed in Africa, he noted the increasing role and influence of China, and decided to research China's role in Africa during his year at the Hoover Institute. His findings and observations are fascinating.

From the start of the war in Iraq, Marines like Major Steve Beck have found themselves thrown into a mission they never trained for: casualty notification. In Final Salute, Pulitzer-prize winning journalist, Jim Sheeler weaves together the stories of Major Beck, the fallen, and the broken homes they have left behind.

Jim Sheeler will be at Stacey's Bookstore on Friday, May 16 at 12:30 pm. For more information, please call (415) 421-4687.

This event is co-sponsored by the Marines' Memorial Association.

THURSDAY 22 MAY 2008 AT 6 PM

Please join us as we salute Viet Nam Era Veterans at a very special Reception and Dinner, with musical entertainment and special guest speakers, General Anthony Zinni and Joe Galloway.

"Blackwater Worldwide, formerly Blackwater USA, is a security contractor, known to most as a private army that the US Government quietly hired, but not so quietly became known to Americans as a result of its apparent combat role as an internal security force in Iraq when in April 2004, four Blackwater contractors were ambushed and burned near their jeeps by an angry mob in Fallujah, Iraq. Their burned bodies were displayed hanging from a bridge over the Euphrates River. This image inflamed US National Command Authorities to the point of ordering Marines to attack into Fallujah (over their objections). Jeremy Scahill, a serious journalist, has uncovered a revealing story and has written about this private army in his well-documented book titled: Blackwater: The Rise of the World's Most Powerful Mercenary Army.

Mr Scahill will be at the Marines' Memorial Association for a Meet the Author program co-sponsored with the World Affairs Council of Northern California .
